If you've been shaving, waxing, and plucking away extra body and facial hair for years and you're sick and tired of doing so, there's an excellent non-invasive answer in the form of ICON™ laser treatments. Dr. Gene Krishingner Jr., an OB/GYN at Women’s and Maternity Care Specialists in Winter Park, Florida, offers ICON laser treatments for women who are ready to achieve smoother skin and less hair in the easiest way possible.
The ICON laser removes hair by sending laser beams directly into the heart of each hair follicle. The laser passes through the skin without causing any damage -- only the hair follicles themselves are affected. The laser light breaks the pigment within the follicle into microscopic pieces and permanently damages the follicle. This means that the treated hair follicles aren’t able to produce new hair in most cases. In the rare event that the follicle wasn't sufficiently damaged to completely stop hair growth, much lighter and finer hair may eventually grow. The ICON laser works entirely below the surface of the skin -- you need do nothing other than relax for short treatment sessions.
ICON laser hair removal is safe and effective in virtually any part of the body that has unwanted hair, including:
The length of each treatment session depends on several factors, including the size of the treatment area and the density of the hair growth. Generally, treatment sessions last anywhere from around 10 minutes to around 30 minutes for each treatment area.
This depends on the total amount of growth, the type of hair, and other individual factors. Patients usually see a reduction in hair growth after only one session, but for optimal results a series of sessions are needed. Treatments usually are spaced at least a month apart. This allows new hair growth to be dealt with as it emerges.
After laser hair removal, your skin may be slightly red and you may experience a sunburn-like feeling in the treatment area. Very mild swelling in the treatment area also may occur. All of these side effects are quite minor and won't interfere with your daily life in any way. It's best to avoid sun exposure immediately after laser hair removal. If you experience any discomfort, ice packs can be applied to the treatment area.
