Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin treatment that uses your body’s healing powers to break down old skin and rebuild it with healthy new proteins. The SkinPen®’s single-use surgical needle cartridges create precise, vertical wound channels in your skin that stimulate your body’s healing processes. Dr. Krishingner and his team use SkinPen by Bellarus Medical to:

  • Reduce scars and stretch marks
  • Improve skin texture
  • Lift and tighten skin
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Remove brown spots and hyperpigmentation
  • Regrow scalp hair (recent hair loss only)

Dr. Krishinger selects from a number of needle lengths depending on the area you’d like improved and your particular skin issue.

What are the advantages of the SkinPen?

Unlike other microneedling devices, the SkinPen is small enough to reach into crevices, such as those around your nose. The SkinPen is also the first microneedling device that was cleared by the FDA to treat acne and other facial scars. The SkinPen only uses disposable single-use needle cartridges, so it’s always sanitary and safe.

How does the SkinPen work?

The SkinPen harnesses your body’s own healing powers to rebuild stronger, newer, and healthier skin with new collagen and elastin.  The process occurs in three phases:

Your body sends blood to the wound channels to disinfect them and remove toxins, debris, and old proteins. The increased circulation helps your skin rebuild itself.

Your skin rebuilds the wound channels with a special type of skin cell called granulation tissue. It also creates new blood vessels to nourish your healing skin.

Your body produces new strands of collagen and elastin. These proteins make your skin more strong, firm, and elastic.

How long does microneedling take?

A microneedling treatment with the SkinPen only takes about 30 minutes (face only). Directly after your treatment, your skin looks dewy and glowing.

Dr. Krishinger or another team member may apply a nourishing serum to your skin while the wound channels are still open. The serum then penetrates deeply into your skin layers to help your cells rebuild themselves.

Your collagen remodeling process takes weeks to months to complete. Within a few months, any scars you have improve, and your skin is:

  • Thicker
  • Firmer
  • Moister
  • More pliable
  • Tighter
  • More toned
  • Free of wrinkles and spots
