Midwifery Q & A

Which services can a midwife provide?

Your dedicated midwife can provide nearly all of the same services as your OB/GYN. A certified nurse midwife (CNM) can offer:

-Family planning
-Preconception care
-Prenatal wellness checks
-Fertility support
-Nutrition and wellness guidance
-Pregnancy care
-Labor and delivery care
-Sexual Wellness

Why would I choose a midwife instead of an OB/GYN?

Some women prefer to have a midwife and an OB/GYN on their birthing plans. Other women would rather have care from a midwife alone. It just depends on your pregnancy and your needs.  At Women’s and Maternity you get the best of both worlds as our Certified midwife works with our Board Certified doctors when the plan changes or when an elevated level of care is needed. For some, midwives offer a way to have as little medical intervention during your labor and delivery as possible.
Midwives specialize in all-natural births and support the care of traditional births as well.  As a patient, you will have to ability to choose your level of care within a comfortable and cozy labor suite.   Our Midwives rely on their expertise and experience to guide you through the labor process naturally. If for some reason your labor doesn’t progress as expected or if you do require a Cesarean section (C-section), the Midwife the doctor available to step in and she can assist him in the operating room.

If I have already had a C-section, can I still get care from a midwife for a vaginal delivery?

It just depends on your health history, your previous labor experience, and the doctor’s evaluation. You might be a good candidate for a vaginal birth after C-section (VBAC). Midwives don’t perform C-sections, but if one is required for you, our Midwife can be right by your side from beginning to end and she’ll be there helping you with recovery.

Can a midwife help me with breastfeeding?

Yes! This is one of the greatest benefits of selecting a midwife to be on your side during your pregnancy. At Women’s and Maternity care specialist our midwife is certified in Lactation counseling. Not only will the Midwife get to know you personally throughout conception, delivery, and labor, she’ll be your biggest cheerleader afterwards. Part of her expertise is coaching mothers on breastfeeding, especially if you’re a first-time mother or have an infant who won’t latch on. She will make sure that you’re comfortable with nursing your little one. She’ll also guide you through healthy eating and diet plans that are essential for nursing moms, so your new baby can get the most from your breast milk.

What’s the difference between a Certified Nurse Midwife and a Certified/Licensed Midwife?

Both have obtained their certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). However, a certified nurse midwife has completed an undergraduate degree and received their RN license. They have also gone through a graduate nursing practitioners program and are licensed accordingly. One major difference also includes that Certified Nurse Midwives have the ability to prescribe medication.
