Scar Treatment Q & A

Women's and Maternity Care Specialists

Am I a good candidate for laser scar treatment?

If you have acne scars, surgical scars, or other types of scars you may be a good candidate for laser scar treatment using the ICON laser system. The ICON greatly reduces the appearance of most types of scars using non-invasive treatments.

Where can ICON laser scar treatment be done?

Virtually any area of the body that has scarring can be treated with the ICON laser. It can be used on the face and other delicate areas in the body.

How does ICON scar treatment work?

ICON scar treatment is completely non-surgical and non-invasive. It's done during quick outpatient sessions at Women’s and Maternity Care Specialists. The ICON device sends tiny beams of fractional laser light beneath the skin to target scar tissue. It won't harm the healthy surrounding skin in any way. The laser energy prompts the body's natural healing ability, which means the breakdown of damaged skin (the scar tissue) and growth of new healthy skin to take its place.

What does laser scar treatment feel like?

Laser scar treatment isn't painful for most patients, and an anesthetic (numbing) cream typically is  applied prior to the beginning of treatment to enhance your comfort level. You may feel a sensation of heat during the treatment, but that's generally tolerated quite well by the majority of patients. If you have any discomfort after the treatment, ice packs can be applied to the treatment area.

How long do laser scar treatment sessions take?

Treatment sessions vary in duration. Most sessions last anywhere from just a few minutes up to half an hour per treatment area.

How many treatment sessions are required?

This varies according to the type of scar, the size of the scar, and the patient's skin. In most cases, between three and five ICON laser scar treatments are needed to get optimal results.

When can I expect to see results?

Many patients see results as soon as their first treatment, but this does vary by individual. You typically notice significant lightening of the scar within a few sessions, with the optimal outcome achieved around a month or six weeks after the final treatment session.

If you want to rid yourself of scars resulting from various events or experiences, contact Women’s and Maternity Care Specialists in Winter Park, Florida, to schedule a consultation to determine whether ICON treatments are right for you.
