Sexual health is an important part of a woman’s physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. At Women’s and Maternity Care Specialists we recognize that sexual wellness is unique to each individual and respect the rights of all our patients. The sexual response is a combination of biological, psychological, social, and interpersonal components. If any one of these components is out of balance, it can impact the entire picture of overall sexual health. It is important to sit down to discuss potential concerns with your healthcare provider so that he or she can help manage you as a whole, unique individual.
Some common sexual wellness concerns we discuss include:
Pain with intercourse can be a very frustrating issue for many women and couples. Pain can arise from multiple causes, which can make pinpointing the exact problem sometimes difficult. At Women’s and Maternity Care Specialists we take into consideration your life stage (are you pregnant, breastfeeding, undergoing other medical treatment, menopausal?) as well as your expectations and desires (does the pain occur all the time, or is it better in certain positions?). We will also search for any underlying pathology. This means that we will look for any infection, may need an ultrasound to rule out abnormal structures, and possibly run bloodwork. At times, all of the results come back normal, at which point we will continue to address any psychological, interpersonal or social concerns, as these all have very real impacts on physical health and well-being.
Many women find that their libidos fluctuate throughout the lifespan and may increase or decrease at different times. It is also important to know that there is no “one size fits all” libido, if you are happy with your own libido, then it is perfect for you! If however, you find that you are not happy with your sexual desire levels, we would like to discuss potential causes and solutions with you.
